THE WORD OF THE WEEK

TITLE: Put Ur Judah 1st: Go back the same way you came            6/3/2019

“After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the Lord, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”  The Lord said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.” Judges 1:1-2

The Book of Judges in the bible displays the long suffering-patience and eternal Love that God shows towards His People. Judges is a tragic sequel to Joshua, the proceeding chapter where it shows how the 12 Tribes of Israel were for the most part obedient to God. God told them under Joshua’s leadership to conquer the “Promise Land” by destroying all idol worshiping. After Joshua had led them into the Promise land, there were more idol-god-worshipers or sin that needed conquering. But Joshua died and he had not or rather God had not provided a replacement. So, the people inquired of God for directions. There was a history of God’s chosen to inquire of decisions when clear directions were not obvious.

For example, after King David was anointed King, he inquired of the Lord which city he was to move and he was blessed (2 Samuel 2:1). Also, the Lord passed by Elijah sitting under a broom tree when he was having a pity-party. Elijah was in despair. Elijah thought the Lord should have responded his way after all he had killed 450 prophets who were worshiping idolatry gods. Elijah inquired of God and came to his senses. Then the Lord told him, “Go back the same way you came.” Elijah was obedient. God then shared his strategic plan with Elijah which end up relieving Elijah’s despair and God’s already providential divine plan is executed.

So, when God answered the people after they inquired of him, the Lord said, Judah shall be 1st to go up against the enemy (the Canaanites).

Why Judah 1st? Judah means PRAISE so when they went out they praised God who is worthy of all praise; Judah was the strongest tribe in battle (Judges 1:4); Judah displays a spirit of obedience thus drove out all the idol worship which other tribes did not; and God knew they would be the Leader Tribe  According to the “Election of grace”. Today, God gives us grace through Jesus Christ who came through the Tribe of Judah which God established before the foundation of this world. So Put Ur Judah 1st: Sometimes you gotta Go back the same way you came.
